Whop Affiliate Program Explained: How It Actually Works

How Whop affiliates work — commission rates, the 30-day attribution window, refund clawbacks, how payouts reach you, and what to check before joining a program.

Whop has become one of the main places digital products get sold — courses, communities, tools, trading education — and with that comes one of the larger affiliate marketplaces around. If you're thinking about promoting something on it, the mechanics are worth understanding before you pick a program rather than after.

This explains how Whop affiliates work in plain terms: what you get paid, when attribution counts, what happens on a refund, and how the money actually reaches you.

Everything here reflects Whop's published behaviour at the time of writing. Platforms change their terms — verify against Whop's own documentation and your dashboard before making decisions.

The basic model

A seller lists a product on Whop. Affiliates get a unique referral link to that product. Someone clicks it, buys, and the affiliate earns a share of the sale. Whop sits in the middle handling checkout, tracking and payment.

The important structural point: Whop pays you, not the seller. You don't invoice anyone, don't chase a small operator for money, and don't depend on their goodwill or solvency. That removes most of the counterparty risk that makes affiliate deals with individual creators unattractive.

Commission rates: the default and the reality

Whop's default product affiliate commission is 30%. That's the platform baseline.

Sellers can override it. They set their own rate, and it can be higher or lower than the default. So "Whop pays 30%" is only true as a starting point — the actual rate is per-product, and the spread between programs is wide.

That's worth knowing because it's the main lever a smaller seller has. A large, recognisable brand doesn't need to pay above default; people will promote it for the name. A smaller product has to make it worth your time, and the way it does that is rate. The CRTLAB course program pays 60% for exactly that reason — double the platform default, on a small brand, as the trade for it being a small brand.

Commissions on subscription products recur for as long as the customer keeps paying. On one-time purchases, you're paid once.

Attribution: the 30-day window, and why the mechanism matters

Whop's default attribution window is 30 days. Someone clicks your link, and if they buy within 30 days, the sale is yours.

The more useful detail is how that attribution is stored. Whop ties the referral to the buyer's Whop account, not purely to a browser cookie. That difference is not academic:

  • A cookie dies when someone clears their browser data.
  • A cookie doesn't follow them from phone to laptop.
  • A cookie is often stripped entirely by in-app browsers — the exact route someone takes when they click a link inside Instagram, TikTok or Discord.

Account-level attribution survives all of that. For anyone promoting through social platforms, where in-app browsers are the norm, this is one of the more consequential differences between affiliate systems and it rarely appears in comparison tables.

Refunds claw the commission back

If a buyer refunds within the window, the commission on that sale is automatically reversed.

This is standard and it's fair, but it should shape how you promote. Volume for its own sake is worth nothing if a chunk of it refunds — you did the work and get paid zero. Referring people who genuinely want the product pays strictly better than referring anyone who'll click.

It's also the practical argument against overselling. Someone sold on a fantasy refunds when they meet reality. Someone who was told accurately what they were buying tends to keep it.

If you want to see what a refund rate is actually costing you rather than assuming it's noise, put the numbers into the affiliate commission calculator — it shows commission per sale before and after clawbacks, and the monthly figure the difference adds up to.

Getting paid: the step people miss

Affiliate earnings accrue against your affiliate record, then transfer to a Whop company balance. Which means you need a Whop company set up to receive them.

This is the single most common stumbling block. It's free and takes a few minutes, but plenty of people join a program, promote it, make a sale and only then discover there's nowhere for the money to land. Set it up before you start promoting, not after.

What to check before joining any Whop program

Beyond the rate:

  • Is the product any good? You'll be recommending it with your own name attached. Whop offers refunds, and a bad product means clawbacks and lost credibility.
  • One-time or recurring? A recurring subscription at a lower rate can outperform a one-time product at a higher one over months.
  • Does the price fit the audience you can reach? A $500 product is a different conversation from a $50 one.
  • Has the seller set a custom rate, and is it above or below the 30% default? Below-default on an unknown brand is a program not worth your time.
  • Is there anything free to lead with? Products with genuinely useful free material around them convert far better, because you can be useful before you ask for money.

How it compares

Against prop firm affiliate programs, which typically pay 10–25% of a challenge fee, Whop's course programs pay a much higher percentage on a smaller ticket. Against broker programs, Whop is dramatically easier to join — no approval process, no regulatory geography problems, no waiting for a referral to deposit and trade a minimum volume before you see anything.

Against direct deals with individual creators, the advantage is structural rather than financial: tracking you didn't have to trust, and payment you don't have to chase. There's a fuller breakdown of the categories in best trading affiliate programs.

The bottom line

Whop's default is 30%, sellers can set their own rate, attribution runs 30 days and is tied to the buyer's account rather than a cookie, refunds claw commission back, and payouts land in a Whop company balance you need to create first. The platform handles tracking and payment, which removes the parts of affiliate marketing that usually go wrong.

What it can't do is distribution. That's still the whole job, and it's covered in how to promote a trading course without an audience.

FAQ

How much do Whop affiliates earn? It depends entirely on the product and the seller. Whop's platform default is 30% of the sale, but sellers set their own rates above or below that. Subscription products pay recurring commission while the customer stays subscribed; one-time products pay once. Your actual earnings depend on how many referred people buy and keep the product.

How long is Whop's affiliate cookie? The default attribution window is 30 days. More importantly, attribution is tied to the buyer's Whop account rather than only a browser cookie, so it survives cleared cookies, in-app browsers and switching between devices.

How do Whop affiliates get paid? Earnings accrue on your affiliate record and are transferred to your Whop company balance. You need a Whop company set up to receive them, which is free and takes a few minutes. Whop handles payment, so you never invoice the seller.

What happens if someone I referred gets a refund? The commission on that sale is automatically clawed back. This applies to every affiliate on the platform, which is why referring genuinely interested buyers pays better than chasing volume.

Is it free to become a Whop affiliate? Joining a product's affiliate program is generally free, and many sellers require no application or minimum audience. You do need a free Whop account for the link and a Whop company to receive payouts.

Which Whop affiliate program should I promote? Whichever product you'd genuinely recommend to the specific people you can reach. Rate matters less than fit — a high commission on something your audience doesn't want pays nothing. Check whether the rate is above or below the 30% default, whether it's one-time or recurring, and whether there's free material you can lead with.
