How the zone is measured
Take the impulse leg — the displacing move — and measure from where it began to its extreme. The retracement levels are drawn back into that leg, and the area between 62% and 79% is the OTE zone. Many traders watch 70.5% as the middle of it.
The direction of measurement matters and is a common error. The leg runs from the start of the move to its end; the retracement is price coming back into that leg. If you measure from the wrong anchor the zone lands in the wrong place, which is why OTE is best drawn on a leg you can point at clearly rather than one you had to hunt for.
Why a deep retracement rather than a shallow one
The logic is arithmetic rather than mystical. Entering deeper into the retracement puts your entry closer to the invalidation point behind the leg's origin, which means a tighter stop for the same target — and therefore a better reward-to-risk ratio on an identical idea.
That is the whole trade-off, and it cuts both ways. Deeper entries offer better ratios but fill less often, because price does not always retrace that far before continuing. Shallow entries fill more reliably at worse ratios. Neither is correct in the abstract; the right choice depends on how often your instrument actually retraces that deep, which is measurable rather than assumed.
What has to be true before OTE applies
OTE is a refinement of an entry, not a reason to take one. Before the zone means anything, three things need to be in place: a clear directional read on the higher timeframe, a liquidity event that started the move, and displacement confirming the move was intentional.
Applied without those, OTE becomes a Fibonacci retracement drawn on an arbitrary leg — which is exactly the criticism levelled at retracement trading generally, and in that form it is a fair one. The zone does not create an edge; it improves the pricing of an edge you already have.
It is also worth checking the leg against the range it sits inside. An OTE entry is by definition a discount entry relative to its own leg, but that leg can sit entirely in the premium half of a much larger dealing range — in which case the entry is well priced locally and poorly priced overall. Premium and discount is the coarser filter that catches this, and it belongs earlier in the sequence than OTE does.
OTE and the levels inside the leg
The OTE zone frequently overlaps the unmitigated areas the impulse left behind — an order block at the leg's origin, or a fair value gap inside it. That overlap is why confluence at OTE is common and why the concepts are usually taught together.
